Karnataka rode on a century by Rahul Dravid and match haul of 10 for 43 by captain Anil Kumble to crush Orissa by an innings and 123 runs on the penultimate day of their four-day Ranji Trophy Super League Group-A match at Ispat Stadium in Rourkela today. This was overall defeat No 66 and match No 156 for Orissa and second defeat in two matches against Karnataka.
Kumble set the platform for victory as his haul of five wickets for 34 runs helped Karnataka bowl out Orissa for 183 after the home team won the toss and opted to bat. Allrounder Pinninti Jayachandra was the top scorer for Orissa with a fighting knock of 45.
In reply, Karnataka declared at 398 for nine to take a first-innings lead of 215 runs. Dravid was instrumental in giving visitors the huge lead, slamming a 260-ball 138, which included 18 boundaries and two sixes. Jayachandra also shone with the ball for Orissa, bagging a career-best haul of five wickets for 64 runs.
Orissa lost the match due to hapless batting in the second innings, which folded up for a paltry 92. Kumble capped the victory with a second-innings haul of five wickets for nine runs. He also achieved a hat-trick in the second innings, dismissing Robin Morris, Gautam Gopal and Subash Mohanty in successive balls.
But one feat Kumbled failed to achieve was to finish the match in two days. According to Jayachandra, the first ball of the match, which BBCC Mohapatra faced off Venkatesh Prasad, was a shooter. Seeing the low bounce, Kumble was heard telling his team-mates that the match would be finished within two days.
